What is glucose?

Glucose, D-glucose is an organic chemical compound, a monosaccharide (simple sugar) of the aldohexose group. It is a white, fine-crystalline solid that easily crystallizes from aqueous solutions as a monohydrate. Crystalline glucose is characterized by a cyclic structure. As a result of the reaction of the aldehyde group at carbon atom C1 with the hydroxyl group at carbon atom C5 in the chain, the so-called six-membered hemiacetal ring is formed.

In the chain form, glucose has four asymmetric carbon atoms (i.e., bonded to four different substituents, thus forming the stereogenic center of the molecule).

Glucose syrup or glucose-fructose syrup is used in the food industry. Glucose also finds application in medicine, e.g., in the form of infusions or for performing an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
