Description
Crookes Radiometer - diameter 70 mm
The Crookes Radiometer consists of a small rotor mounted inside a glass bulb and attached to an axis in such a way as to minimize mechanical resistance. The glass bulb is filled with air at a greatly reduced pressure. The radiometer is set in motion by sunlight or by light from a lamp. The brighter the light, the faster it spins. The rotation of the rotor is caused by differential heating of the light and dark surfaces due to absorption of radiation.
An excellent teaching aid illustrating the conversion of radiant energy (light energy) into the kinetic energy of the moving radiometer rotor.
