Polyesters - are polymers that contain ester bonds in their main chains. Their main chains are stiffer and more polar than those of vinyl polymers, which influences their tendency to form a crystalline phase. Polyesters, on the other hand, are tough but brittle and more difficult to melt.
The esterification reaction of hydroxy acids with themselves and the reaction of diols with dicarboxylic acids are the basic methods of polyester synthesis. The basis of most polyester fibers (film, plastic putties) is poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) formed in the above manner.
